This weeks feature oil is Rosemary! A lovely herb used often in french cooking. It’s aromatic, warm scent is perfect paired with poultry. Let’s look at the profile for Rosemary as an essential oil and discover what it can do for you!

Analgesic, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, astringent, decongestant, diuretic, expectorant, mucolytic, warming.

1,8-cineole, camphor, a-pinene

Chemical Families:

Esters, ketones, monoterpenes, monoterpenols, oxides, sesquiterpenes

Uses:

Rosemary Essential Oil is credited as having stimulating and warming actions and can be used in numerous skin care products. It is used in hair care to help prevent hair loss, promote hair growth and improve scalp problems.  It nourishes the scalp and keeps hair looking healthy and shiny. Rosemary oil is said to have antiseptic and antimicrobial properties and is used to balance intense emotions and help to control mood swings. It lifts the spirits, counters feeling blue, and helps avoid stress.

Safety:

Do not apply to or near the face of infants of children. Avoid if you suffer from epilepsy.

Since we’ve taken a closer look at Rosemary’s profile, below are some ideas how you can use it in your home!

  1. 3-4 drops Rosemary and 4-6 drops Pink Grapefruit in the diffuser is fantastic for an afternoon blend. It’s centering yet invigorating.
  2. Add 1 drop of Rosemary to your quarter-sized amount of shampoo 2-3 times a week. Very invigorating, as Rosemary helps stimulate blood flow to the scalp.
  3. Have a backache? Combine 3-4 drops Lavender and 2-3 drops Rosemary with 1/2 c Epsom salt and 1 tablespoon of your favorite carrier oil. Stir to combine, then add to warm bath! Relaxation is just a few minutes away…

  1. Is rosemary safe to use in a bath? I thought that it was a warming oil and shouldn’t be used in a bath? And is it even safe to use a carrier oil? Shouldn’t it be something like castile soap?

    1. Hi Gwen, rosemary is not a hot oil and it can be used in the bath. You can use carriers to dilute the oil but it will make the tub slippery. Castile soap would definitely help prevent a slippery tub but it doesn’t make it wrong to choose to use a carrier oil if desired.

Some of our older blogs contain information that was relevant at the time it was published, but should now be updated. We have been going through these older blogs to correct these issues, and appreciate your careful eye on this one! 🙂

  2. Is Rosemary safe to diffuse around children (8 and 10 years old)? I know not to use it topically on them, but wasn’t sure about diffusing.

    1. Hi Stacie,

      We do not recommend using any non-KidSafe oils on/around children under the age of 10. This includes topical application as well as diffusion. I hope this helps!

  3. Are the profiles available somewhere for all of Plant Therapy’s oils? I would love to print them out and put them in a binder for my personal use.
