Today’s DIY is a linen spray. We all know that children and adults alike get very excited during the holidays. There’s all the lights, the parties, the extra sugar! Not to mention dreaming about all the fun to be had with family and the gifts that will be opened! Who can chill out long enough to fall asleep? Well, let’s try to solve that problem with this linen spray!
What you need:
- You can use vodka or witch hazel. I prefer vodka since witch hazel can make your product have a different scent. The choice is yours.
- a spray bottle
- a selection of essential oils.
What you’ll do:
- Add your vodka or witch hazel to your spray bottle until it’s almost full.
- Next, add your essential oils. Since we are spritzing linen’s we don’t need to be overly concerned about dilution rates here. However, a rule of thumb is about 20 drops per ounce of spray you are making. So in a 4 ounce bottle, a size I generally use, you’ll want a total of 80 drops.
- Then, allow your oils to meld with the vodka or witch hazel for about an hour (at least). You can let it sit longer.
- Shake well and spray down your bed to create a relaxing atmosphere!
A few recipe ideas to get your started:
- For peaceful rest combine 7 drops Mandarin, 10 drops Lavender and 3 drops Cedarwood virginian.
- For an even easier DIY, use one of our synergies geared toward sleep. For adults SleepAid, Relax, or Tranquil. For children use Calming the Child, Nighty Night, or Sweet Dreams.
Made this with Calming the Child and my kiddos fell asleep unusually fast during nap today. I am now going to keep this stocked at all times! Thank you for the recipe 🙂
so if i can’t get high proof vodka, add polysorbate to water?
I can’t wait to try this. I just need to get witch hazel or ever clear. Is the ever clear ok to use for kids? Also would I use the same amount of drops of eos for kids?
Hi Kim! Because Everclear evaporates quickly, we don’t consider this to be a risk around kids. However, we no longer recommend using witch hazel as it doesn’t properly emulsify the oils. But you definitely should do whatever feels best for your family. If you don’t want to use alcohol, you can use polysorbate 20 as a preservative in water-based DIYs. Also, here’s a great recipe for a Happy Place Monster Away Room Spray that is designed just for kids!
How would I know how much of it to use? Do I need something else as well?
Could you just use vodka (Everclear) and not add water?
Absolutely!
Thank you! Would it need to be kept refrigerated?
Nope! Some people prefer to keep their sprays in the fridge, but it’s really up to you 🙂
How long will this stay good at room temperature if I made exactly as stated using vodka?
Since this is a water based product, it’s best stored in the fridge when not in use & can be safely used for 10-14 days once made. If you wish it to last longer, you’ll need to explore the option of using a preservative (which is something I need to do as well)
I thought that if you used just vodka and essential oils, there was no need for a preservative?
What kind of bottle can be used for the spray? Does it have to be glass?
You can use plastic if it’s marked PET or PETE.
Another question: for a room disinfectant spray could you use isopropyl alcohol instead of vodka?
I was wondering if you need the alcohol/witch hazel, or if you could also just use water/EOs and just shake it really well every time? Or is there a particular reason you recommend alcohol/witch hazel?
