Father’s Day is just around the corner!
Don’t let this holiday sneak up on you — Plant Therapy is here to help! This week, we will be introducing brand new just-for-dad DIYs for all kinds of dads! Today’s dad: Hipster Dad!
How do you define what a dad is?
Well, he’s the navigator of road trips, the comedian extraordinaire, the solid rock to lean on when times get tough, and the philosophical guide through life! Great dads help support their family, while inspiring, motivating, and encouraging a sense of wonder and commitment in their children. That’s no light load to carry. And they do this all while staying true to their own personal interests and style!
Wait. Style? Dad?
Those two words don’t always go together, do they? Well, thanks to the growing number of hipster dads these days, they do now!
If you’re wondering what a hipster dad is, you’re not alone. It is tricky to pin down these creative men who take “Dad Swag” to the next level. They have a wide range of passions and hobbies, from retro gaming to design to hats. They may be foodies or book lovers. Maybe they stay ahead of the latest trends or revive old ones. And even though a hipster dad can be many things, they overwhelmingly have a singular common thread: a beautifully well-groomed or purposefully lush, rugged beard.
So this Father’s Day, show the hipster dad in your life that you appreciate him by helping him take care of that beard he loves so much! Try these DIYs to give Dad something totally unique, nourishing, and sure to take that beard to the next level of awesomeness!

Plant Therapy also offers a beard set that includes a bottle of beard oil (Smokey Lumberjack and Urban Fresh), a tin of beard balm, a beard comb, and a dropper. This set will keep beards healthy, softer, and more manageable, while helping skin stay healthy and flake-free!
If I don’t have mango butter can I just leave it out or put in more shea butter. I have Shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax on hand.
You can definitely use more Shea Butter to make up the difference. If you left it out completely, it would change the consistency too much.
Such a great idea- my husband will love this shave cream! I recently just got into oils and love that you have diy recipes like this. Thank you!
Is there a good alternative to everclear for the after-shave oil?
Audrey, if you would not like to use everclear, you can substitute it for a water-based product, such as witch hazel or a hydrosol, and then make sure to add an emulsifier like Polysorbate 80 and a preservative like Optiphen Plus.
Thank you for the diy recipes for our men. My husband doesnt like anything with chemicals so I’m glad i finally have a natural alternative!
I’m always looking for natural alternatives to chemically-laden products. Super excited to try out these aftershave and shaving cream recipes. I’ve spent quite a bit of time mixing floral and citrusy smelling oils together for myself, so happy to have guidance for manly scents for my hubby.
I made this for hubby on Fathers Day…I have a couple recommendations: don’t use in the shower to shave your legs! Ha! It’s quite oily! I did have to add some unscented body wash to it as h prefers a sudsy shave. I also like it better with he added suds for my legs!! Very moisturizing! The aftershave is AMAZING I even love it and trying to come up with a bikini area recipe now!!! Love it! Thanks PT!
I’m very confused by the after shave recipe.. is vegetable glycerin an emulsifier? If not, what in the recipe will emulsify the oils?
The kids and I made this for my husband for Father’s Day. He loved it. Thanks for the idea!
Loving these ideas for Father’s Day! Thank you for the inspiration!
You are so welcome Lindsay! Let us know what you come up with for the Dads in your life 🙂
Would it work substitute cocoa butter for the mango butter?
Yes, you absolutely can! Let us know what you think of the completed recipe with the substitution.
What would be a good sub for fir needle in the shave cream?
My father would love these! He is not only an inspiration to me and my sister, but has been such a great role model for my boys! He taught each of them how to shave properly when the “dirt” on their faces became 5 o’clock shadows. As they grow into men he continues to provide then guidance and teach them by example your a man should behave. These will make anan exceptional and symbolic Father’s Day gift for me dad ❤️
Mia, thank you so much for sharing about your father! He sounds like a wonderful man! We are so happy we can help you make Father’s Day a little more special 🙂
