Summer Solstice: Sunshine For Your Soul

Need a little more sunshine for your soul?

We have a perfect opportunity to prepare ourselves as we welcome Summer Solstice on June 21st.  If we see these milestones as signs to tune in, we can tune up our spirit by absorbing the intention of the commemoration.

Marking the longest day of the year, Summer Solstice shines with an abundance of natural, radiant light. And, indeed, sunshine serves as necessary source of nourishment and a sustaining force for our overall wellbeing.

The Sunshine State

Celebrated since time immemorial, Summer Solstice symbolizes a sense of renewal. In modern times, Summer Solstice also signals the first day of summer, that singular season we often reserve for periods of respite.

Like ceremonies since ancient times, we can connect with the essence of this longest day of light, by creating our own personal self-care rituals to help revitalize our spirits.


Sunshine for Your Soul

Let’s look at some simple ways we can soak in the spirit of the sun to enhance our shine from the inside out. In doing so, we can commemorate Summer Solstice and celebrate our own sense of self-renewal.

For me, it’s really a matter of breaking this down into simple steps to help restore our sense vitality coupled with aromatherapy as an amazing companion. For this purpose, Plant Therapy’s Chakra Synergies can enhance our effort to bring balance to our whole beings.

I have suggested some pairings you may wish to try, but feel free to reach for those you feel  suit you best personally. When putting the steps together as an overall practice, choose the synergy where you feel you need the most support at that given time.

You can use the undiluted synergies for inhalation by adding to a personal aromatherapy inhaler, adding drop or two to a tissue wafted away from the nose, or add to your diffuser. The pre-diluted roll-on bottles make topical application easy. You can anoint the associated chakra areas, or apply on the pulse points as a personal aromatic perfume.



Summer arrives after preceding periods when we often make mad dashes from one event to the next from fall clear through spring. The warmer, lazy days of summer herald a time of respite, whether we take much needed breaks to bask in the sun on vacation, or enjoy restful periods outdoors in our own backyards.

Once we have given ourselves a break to enjoy the benefits of relaxation, we most likely need to turn further attention to our minds. While our bodies may be in repose, it is not uncommon for our minds to remain affected by repetitive and worrisome thoughts holding our whole being in a state of nervous tension.

Releasing this hold requires more actively calming the mind through practices of introspection such as meditation. Like sunshine, which serves as a natural cleanser, the act of reflecting light inward can help to illuminate what may be clouding over our spirits.

In bringing relaxation to the mind through reflection, we can begin to let go of states of internal tension and resistance, helping enhance our overall sense of resilience.

Meditation — calming the conscious mind to allow for inward introspection and higher information.

While there are many forms of meditation, spanning many belief systems, there is no need begin by diving into the complexities and nuances of all the many forms. Even simple and short is effective for enhancing your wellbeing. You can start by focusing on the breath and counting,  and then, returning to the breath when the mind wanders away. Actively looking inward, with the intent of shining the light into our shadows, can allow us to see what we might not normally creating an awareness to clear the clutter from the corners. We can, then, begin to let go of those things that create a resistance in our energy such as old emotional and energetic patterns holding us in the past and blocking our progress.

This sense of release creates space for us to regain perspective on our own unique purpose and passions, which may have been flagging under the weight of our sagging spirits.

Reigniting this light allows our spirit to shine more brightly so that we may stay better connected to our purpose and radiate a more positive outlook.

Visualization — using your mind’s eye to create a healing image on which to focus.

You might use visualization in one of two ways in this instance. You could choose to focus on a particular image that is peaceful to you such as a favorite or imagined spot to relax. Or, you could choose to see yourself reaching a particular milestone in your purpose and imagining how that might look and feel. Both these approaches bring you back to your path when you wander away.

Use to help strengthen your purpose and ability to connect to higher spiritual consciousness. Invites pure, radiant, and joyful energy allowing connection with greater self-knowledge and our higher selves. Nourishes the spirit with a sense of wholeness throughout our whole being while helping to heal spiritual wounds. Gently encourages strength in our spiritual growth to know greater love and deeper purpose.

Once we have relaxed our body and mind, revitalized our sense resilience, released old negative energy, reconnected with our purpose, and reignited our inner radiance, we may experience a sense of rejoicing in our renewal.

But, it is important to note, that rather than simply a state of having arrived, the act of remaining revitalized requires active refreshing.

Commemorating Summer Solstice with a renewal ritual can be a soul satisfying practice. But, to fully benefit we can choose to recommit ourselves to a continuous routine of self-checking, self care and self balancing to sustain this sense of renewal.

The lazy days of summer can provide the space to refine what works for us until it becomes second nature. Then, we can break down the entire ritual into smaller bits for busy days when life again picks up speed. When we need it, we will have a practice of to sustain the sunshine in our soul.

This is a great way to reframe our thoughts  to a more positive outlook when mental chatter has us wandering into the weeds.
