Sometimes summer fun can lead to summer bruising and bumps. To combat these painful black and blue beauties, certain essential oils work wonders! They can help speed up the healing process, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve their overall appearance.
Let’s take a look at a few go-to oils when you need some relief from these common skin injuries!
Essential oils for healing:
- Lavender: This gentle, all-around amazing oil helps reduce inflammation and swelling, while also being chocked full of skin healing properties.
- Helichrysum Italicum: Great for reducing the appearance of bruises, this powerful wound-healing oil aids in healing muscle tissue and reduces pain, inflammation, and swelling while enhancing blood circulation.
- Helichrysum Organic Hydrosol: Not only is the essential oil wonderful for bruising, but so is the hydrosol! Soothing and calming to the skin, and gentle enough to use directly on the skin, this is a great product for healing skin.
- Cypress: Not only does this oil provide relief to swelling and pain, it also improves blood circulation. Plus, its astringent properties prevent excessive blood flow to promote clotting by tightening the tissues.
- Frankincense: Relaxing and pain relieving, this is wonderful option to healing that also helps to reduce the appearance of bruising.
- Better Than Kisses Synergy: This wonderful blend of Lavender, Marjoram Sweet, Cypress, Tea Tree, and Blue Tansy is specifically formulated for helping the owies of children ages 2 to 10.

Riding bikes, playing tag, climbing trees, and swinging around monkey bars under the hot summer sun…This is what makes summer the best time of year to be a kid. But for many of us parents, it means nervous nail biting, yelling out safety reminders, and fantasizing about wrapping our precious kiddos head to toe in bubble wrap! Thankfully, when the tumbles and stumbles happen, hugs, kisses and (hopefully!) essential oils are there to save the day!
I just dropped a plastic cutting board right above my pinky toe and my foot instantly bruised up and swelled. I only have lavender and frankincense (I’m very new to eo) will those two help and if so what else could I use and how many drops of each. Thank you in advance.
P.s. I have an ice pack on my foot
They are definitely great options. If you don’t find relief after a day or two, please have it checked out by your doctor to rule out anything serious.
I bruise very easily so I’m excited to try this
Excellentm and just what I was searching for
We NEED this for our active little boys!! Thank you!
I just found this and excited to try this out on my 3 boys this summer. I am pretty sure it will come in handy. Thank you!
Will regular lavender work as well in this blend?
Absolutely!
This will be great for my 3 boys!
I really appreciate the effort this company puts into their education. Thank you once again!
My daughter is a pole vaulter and the pole will bruise the tender spot on the inside of her arm, just above her wrist. Even with a long wrist band, she will normally have about 4-6 inches of bruising. This blog post is going to be so helpful for us to find a way for her bruises to be minimized so that she doesn’t get compounded bruising week after week. Can’t wait to give these a try. . .and THANK YOU for the substitution chart as well. That is an AMAZING resource!!!
Thank you ! I have all of these oils and cant wait to make this!
I am so interested to try out these oils and all of the different purposes once I dig into them soon!
I have all these oils and will be happy to try this!
My dad is starting to suffer from senile purpura, I don’t think he really believes in essential oils, so hopefully this blend changes his mind!
Adding this recipe to my list of things to try!
Thanks so much for sharing this recipe. I love the Kid Safe line!
This blend sounds so great! With 3 kids in my house, it would get a lot of use!
I noticed that marjoram sweet is commonly found in synergies.. Will there be a spotlight on this oil soon to educate us of its therapeutic benefits?
Maybe!
Carrier oil and roller balls are en route to my house now. Can’t wait to try!
I have limited oils. My son got a bruise 2 days ago. I have a 5ml roller blend that contains 1 drop of tea tree oil, 1 drop of lavender and 1 drop of orange sweet. Is this okay with his bruise?
Dixie, those oils should be fine on a bruise. I’m curious if you noticed it helped heal the bruise as an alternate to the recipe on this post?
I’m going to try this, can I substitute helichcrysum hydrosol for the oil?
You would need a solubilizer to mix the hydrosol and the other oils.
Woohoo! This is great information for my 2 year old son! Thanks, PT!
Thank you for this recipe! The perfect addition to my daycare first aid kit.
I haven’t tried Helichrysum Italicum yet. I will have to put this on my wish list to try. My family gets lots of bumps and bruises
.
Can’t wait to try this rollerball. I have been looking for a blend like this for a while.
I’m going to try this for my kids. Their legs are covered in bruises from riding bikes all summer! I’m also going to add Better Than Kisses to my wishlist. It sounds like it will also smell great!
I only have one of these ingredients, which is lavender (not lavender fine like someone else said). My sister and daughter are very clumsy, and are always getting new bruises. If this can help them, then I will add the HI and Cypress to my Wish List, and buy them next! Thank you very much!
Helichrysum Italicum is amazing for this, I would highly recommend investing in it.
this sounds like its gonna be very useful!
Looking forward to trying this. I have all the ingredients and it’s good timing because I was just wondering what to use the last little bit of Near Perfection for.
Perfect timing! 🙂
Love this post. Sounds like a great blend for ouchies! I don’t have Lavender Fine, but I hope Lavender will be almost as effective!
Going to try this with hemp oil. We deff need something for bumps and bruises around here.
this is great! i have a rather clumsy 10 year old. can i make it by the gallon? Lol
Sure!
is this kid safe?
Yep!
This sounds like a great blend!! I will be making this asap!
Sounds great! Can’t wait to try this.
is there a substitute for frankencense?
Frankincense really is a must have for me when it comes to bumps and bruises!
Wish I had this earlier for my grandkids!
oh this recipe looks amazing. perfect timing as my son had a spill at the park today. Looks like another one for the first aid box!
Thank you, will have to come back to this blog next time I get a bruise or scar. I also like aloe vera gel for scars and stopping the bleeding. I like to break the leaves and use the gel and working at UPS I get so many cuts and scars I always ran out of the plant and could not find them in any store so now I have the Plant therapy aloe vera gel in large size 🙂
Yay I have all these oils going to whip this up!!
Is there a substitute for helichrysum? It’s the only one I don’t have. Thanks!
Hello Kate! Frankincense would be a great substitute for that oil
I use Better Than Kisses for everything!! I Love it! It has saved this family from disaster on more than one occasion! I bought a 100ml bottle during CAM so I could be sure we would not run out!! It will be hard to stray and try this blend…❤️
Thank you for sharing your success with Better Than Kisses! The recipe in this post is a great alternative for the Better Than Kisses blend. Let us know what you think if you do end up giving it a shot
I keep seeing Cypress pop up as a useful oil… better add to my cart!! Thanks for this great recipe!
Cypress is definitely a great oil to have on hand!
Could this be made into a lotion instead of a roller blend?
Absolutely!
This sounds great!
I can’t wait to try this! I don’t have Near Perfection but I have plenty of other carrier oils to choose from.
That’s great, Lori! Hope you love it!
Thanks for the recipe. I’ve got some ugly clumsy bruises. Can’t wait to help them vanish!
You’re welcome, Shari! Hope those clumsy marks get cleared up soon! (I’m the same way! I seem to find random mysterious little bruises all the time) 🙂
Cant wait to try this!
Thank you, Lynn! We hope you are able to put this information to good use!
This blend sounds incredible for so many things! I can’t wait to try it!
Thank you, Rebekah!
I had no idea cypress could be used for this purpose and I’ve been wondering what to do with it. Thanks!
So glad we could give you some more uses for Cypress! It’s a wonderful oil 🙂
Would this be good for scratches or bites?
It could provide some relief, absolutely. 🙂
Would love to see a kidsafe recipe. Better than kisses is on my shopping list for my kids.
Hmmm, it says at the top this is a kid safe DIY. I do not have PT cypress yet, so not sure if it is labeled Kid Safe. Maybe lowering the dilution…? Please help PT gurus…
This recipe is KidSafe and has the KidSafe logo on the top left corner. 🙂
This recipe is KidSafe for kiddos 2+ 🙂
Thank you!
HI Am I able to use the Derma blend for this as well? Thanks!
It has some oils that may help, but I wouldn’t use it for this purpose as it has some pretty powerful oils that should only be used for the intended purpose and for short periods of time.
sounds like a good blend! is there a replacement for Cypress?
I would take a look at this helpful substitution chart! 🙂
https://www.planttherapy.com/pdfs/substitution_chart.pdf
Thank you, thank you for the chart! That is exactly what I’ve been wishing for! I have screen shots from various blogs saved in my tablet, and random notes in a notebook I keep for essential oil recipes and such, but a chart like this is JUST what I needed. So convenient and useful, and much more organized! I’ve been trying more and more PT synergies lately but usually I like making my own blends so it is really handy to know what oils are good for various things, especially when I don’t have a certain oil indicated in a recipe.
We have found a mixture of Frankincense and Lavender to work well for healing bruising quickly.
