Which Eucalyptus Essential Oil Should I Choose?

Eucalyptus. Just the word conjures up the image of cute and cuddly koalas slowing munching on the leaves of this tree. In addition to being the munchy food of choice for these furry creatures, Eucalyptus Essential Oil is an incredibly useful and therapeutic oil. Like many of the essential oils that Plant Therapy, there is more than one variety to choose from. Before you get overwhelmed and start choosing at random, take a look as we break down each Eucalyptus essential oil and help you decide.

Which Eucalyptus Essential Oil Should I Choose?

Eucalyptus Dives

The only KidSafe oil on this list, Eucalyptus Dives is the optimal choice for any household with small children. This variety originates in Australia and strong herbaceous, woody, minty scent that is stimulating and uplifting. Use it to help clear up sniffles and ease congestion. It can also provide a helpful mental boost when you need a pep or want to freshen a stale room

Eucalyptus Globulus

Eucalyptus Globulus has a strong, very herbaceous scent with soft woody undertones. In addition to offering respiratory support, it can ease aching muscles and joints. It can also be used to stimulate healthy circulation and bring a feeling of warmth to the body.

Eucalyptus Radiata

This is the mildest of three varieties of Eucalyptus essential oils. It has a crisp, clean, aroma with a hint of citrus and floral. It has many of the same properties and benefits of Eucalyptus Globulus, but with a softer aroma.

  • thank you, this was so helpful going into the flu season. I have often wondered what the differences were and other companies have not been so clear.

  • Thanks for the comparison of the three. Eucalyptus Globulus is pretty strong so I wanted to try a different one. Dives sounds like the way to go, especially since I sometimes have grandkids around.

  • Love having this explanation of all 3. Haven’t tried radiata before, but I love eucalyptus so I’m very intrigued. Dives all the way for us right now though, but that’s more than ok because, it smells great!

  • Thank you! I have often wondered what the differences were and which to use when….and your explainations were clear and not too “sciency” for me to understand!

  • Ever since I was a kid, I loved the scent of eucalyptus. In the 90’s, it was a staple decor in every household (the dried out ones). LOL. Never thought I would still love its scent as I grew up and discovered EOs. Didn’t thinkt there would be various origins but glad to know… and one that is Kidsafe too. Thanks for sharing.

  • So happy this points out that not all Eucalyptus oils are safe for kids! I used Eucalyptus Globolus in a diffuser and it caused irritation for both my child and myself. I will be trying Dives next!

  • Radiata is my personal favorite and I diffuse it with Balsam Fir and Candy Cane. So incredible, in my opinion!

  • Thank you for this! I now need dives! I never knew there were three and that they were different. I love that plant therapy takes the time to explain the different oils to us!

  • Thank you so much for the detailed information. I am not a fan of the Eucalyptus G. But I LOVE Dives! Now I need to put Eucalyptus R on my list.

  • Thanks for the explanation. I’ve been using Globulis in my linen spray but I will have to give Dives a try!

  • Thank you for this! I’m a newbie when it comes to essential oils so the research can be overwhelming. Add in blending and it’s a new world inside a new world (!!!), so these breakdowns are very helpful for me. I bought the organic Eucalyptus Globulus and made my first roller for my sick hubby, but now I know I’ll need Dives when my little one gets a wee bit older.

  • Im glad I saw this tonight because I was looking for an oil for respiratory issues. Looks like globulus is for me!

  • Thank you for this, I purchased all three types when I first started with oils, as I really didn’t know which one to get, now I know how to use them, it also reminds me I need to look up shelf life, thanks PT for teaching me so much, still so much to learn.

  • I’m so glad this has been explained into details. I know there is so many controversy about weather Eucalyptus is safe for children or not. I can actually use Eucalyptus for my breathing issues a lot and I’m glad there is now a kid version that i can diffuse without worries.

  • I hadn’t heard of Eucalyptus Dives; interesting article! Thank you for continuously providing such informative blog posts. I am constantly sending friends and family to Plant Therapy. Information like this reassured me that PT is a company I can trust and rely on.

  • This is great to have this comparison. How does Eucalyptus Dives compare to the others in terms of scent? Is it similar or very different? I can’t really handle the typical Eucalyptus scent so I’m just curious if I could handle Dives.

  • Glad to know you have a kid safe variety. My husband loves the scent of Eucalyptus, but I’ve been reluctant to diffuse around the kids. (I got him a big bottle of the Globulus that he diffuses at his office.) Now I’ll get some kid safe to diffuse at home as soon as my bank account recovers from all the Plant therapy deals I bought in December!

  • Thank you PTcfor this post! I never even realized there were three different eucalyptus oils available. I always had heard eucalyptus was safe for kids, but I’m glad you clarified there is only one variety that is kidsafe

  • I never knew Eucalyptus radiata is the mildest of the three. I thought Eucalyptus dives was the mildest since it’s KidSafe. What measure did you use when you say that Eucalyptus radiata is the mildest?

  • Thanks for explaining the differences!! My boyfriend can’t stand eucalyptus, but maybe dives will be a good addition to my oil collection!

  • Great info! I’ve always wondered the difference between the varieties. I love to diffuse eucalyptus globulus and lavendar!

  • I am new to PT and EO in general. I have been overwhelmed by the many EO that have different varieties. This is one of the reasons I have been so slow in getting into EO (many companies, many varieties of same EO, which is the proper use for what). I appreciate the PT blogs that take the time to explain the difference between the different varieties of the same EO. This information is very helpful, especially to those of us new to EO. Thank you again PT.

  • Eucalyptus R is my go to oil for pain related to arthritis and my respiratory problems. I also have Eucalyptus that has a citronella note that I use with other oils to make a bug/tick spray.

  • I am happy to see there is an eucalyptus version for the little ones! With kids under 3 it’s never too much precaution to take! I read about eucalyptus both being safe for kids and not, so it was confusing for me. Now I know there are many types of eucalyptus and I know what to put on my list for the next purchase. Thank you for this info, I will be checking the eucalyptus dives product page for more usage ideas !

  • Thank you for the information. I have both Eucalyptus Globulous and Eucalyputs Dives. Love both and have taken the opporutnity in the Dec sales to order one more each!

  • Thank you for the detailed information. l have both the eucalyptus globolus and eucalyptus dives; and have taken the opportunity in Dec sales order one more each!

  • I did not know about kid safe oils when I bought the eucalyptus g nor did I realize there were different kinds. Should I not use it with a 2 year old in the house?

  • I only have Globus which I find very strong. Thanks for explaining the other two. I will definitely be trying them out.

  • So happy to have this explained! I’ll be using Dives in my kid friendly shower steamers! Thanks Plant Therapy!

  • Thank you so much for the information on the different eucalyptus’s. I never even realized there was more than one. The eucalyptus glob. oil is in my 32 oil set & I am excited to try it.

  • This was very informative and I’m super glad PT put this out, as I was under the impression that there weren’t any eucalyptus oils safe for kids!

  • I love all 3 but dives is our go to for all cough and congestion issues even for the adults. We diffuse it with equal parts Cedarwood Atlas and have had remarkable results! This combo has saved many a nights sleep in our house!

  • I had no idea there was a Eucalyptus that was kidsafe! That’s good to know. A question I have is Can you use Eucalyptus Dives in place of the alternatives in recipes that call for one of the other Eucalyptus’?

  • Oh wow! There’s more than one type?!! So cool! I appreciate the oily education that Plant Therapy offers on their blog. Thank you ❤️

  • Great to know that the kid safe version is also benifitial for the respiratory system. With 3 little kidos I try to stick mostly to kid safe oils.

  • As a newbie to oils, I am finding so many gems in your blog. Thank you for taking the time to create these resources for people that are learning.

  • I love Eucalyptus Globulus! I mix it with tea tree and lavender for my own vapor rub. Also great to just take a quickquick for energy or when anxiety has me struggling for a deep breath.

  • I am thrilled to find out that there is a kidsafe variety of eucalyptus. Can the dives version helps with cold & flu aches for kids?

  • I had no idea that there were different types of eucalyptus oils out there and I’m so glad you explained each of the 3 that you carry. Thank you for carrying a Kid Safe eucalyptus option too!

  • How strong is the citrus scent in the Radiata? This sounds like something I would love to give a try! Eucalyptus is amazing during times of cold and flu, it’s my go-to when I can’t breathe due to stuffy nose.

  • Thanks for explaining the differences. I have Radiata and love I it. Now I have Globulus on the way. Eucalyptus is one of my favorites because of the different uses.

  • I love the scent of eucalyptus! Just wondering though, do the different types come from different parts of the plant? Maybe a dumb question, but I’m just curious.

  • I’ve only used eucalyptus radiata and it works wonders when I had the flu 2 weeks ago. Cleared my sinuses right up and made breathing a little easier. The other 2 types are new to me though, mint try the globulus species eo next for muscular aches

  • This is really helpful information – it’s easy to think that since they all have similar names, they can be used interchangeably, but now it’s good to know what distinguishes them!

  • Thank you for explaining the differences in these three types of eucalyptus. So helpful. I enjoy these educational blogs that PT have.

  • Does PT ensure that the Eucalyptus radiata and Eucalyptus Dives they got is sustainably harvested ? As an animal lover, I wont want the cute little koala bears to be starved of their food.

I tried the organic Eucalyptus Gobulus previously. The scent is a tad harsh.. I wonder if Eucalyptus Radiata smells better? Is it useful for congestion too? And supporting healthy circulation?

  • Thanks for explaining the difference between the three types of Eucalyptus. I have bottles of Globulus and Radiata. Looking forward to trying Dives.

  • Thank you so much for the explanations! I always appreciate the quality education you guys provide to ensure we are getying the most from our oils. I love E. Dives I haven’t tried the other 2 since they are not kidsafe but I think I may have to add them to my wish list.

  • I had no idea there were three different types of eucalyptus. I recently ordered the kidsafe one and I love it. Thank you for the breakdown of the three types.

  • Good to know! I would love to try the radiata. I often use globulus to make bath bombs, they are fantastic in a hot bath when I am feeling a bit under the weather or sore from working out.

  • I’m glad there is a kid safe version. Eucalyptus is one of my favorite oils. I don’t have kids, but I want to be safe if I make something for my friends who have kids or if their kids come around.

    1. Alice, since this, unfortunately, is not a Eucalyptus we carry I recommend consulting with the company you purchased it from 🙂

  • I LOVE this! Thank you for breaking down what can seem like overwhelming information at times and making it sime to choose the best option for my needs.

  • Looks like I’ll be adding the kid safe one to my wish list. Didn’t know PT made this until now. Thanks for sharing .

  • Thank you for this post! I’m glad I read it before I placed my order. My MIL had asked me for eucalyptus oil to help with congestion and easier breathing. Now I know which one I need to order. Thank you for the good, simple information!

  • I am so glad this was posted! I now can have a handy reference and I will be using the correct eucalyptus for my needs at the time.

  • I’m grateful for this article! I was looking to get eucalyptus for its respiratory abilities but I don’t love the smell of globulus. I’m glad to know I can get radiata instead and experience similar benefits without the intense smell.

  • I love all three of these varieties. They are great to use when congested and I even add the Radiata to my insect repellent synergy. You can’t go wrong with any of these varieties.

  • Thanks PT for taking the time to explain the differences between these oils (and others as well). Sometimes it can be tough knowing which oil to choose, and these simple explanations help tremendously with the decision-making process.
