6 Unexpected Ways to Use Your Original Organic Healing Balm

Yesterday we launched our new Balm Squad! This set of four healing balms features different essential oil synergies blended into the popular Organic Healing Balm. But surprise!  Our Original Healing Balm got an Update too!

The Swiss Army knife of all Plant Therapy products, Organic Healing Balm long been a customer favorite because of how incredibly versatile and easy to use it is. But even with such a loved and popular product, we knew we could do better. So our team went back to the drawing board to reevaluate each ingredient and process the balm goes through, from start to finish, to find ways to make our Healing Balm the absolute best it can be.

And now we are ready to introduce it to you!

The original organic healing balm from plant therapy

The Original Organic Healing Balm (yep—we updated the name a bit too), includes all of the same ingredients you love but is now softer, more luxurious, and absent of any grainy texture. It’s still perfect for all skin types, all ages, and a ton of issues. Need a reminder? Let’s go over what The Orginal Organic Healing Balm can do for you and your family!

1. Help heal your dry, flaky skin.

Especially in winter, dry skin can be a real problem. Freezing weather, especially when coupled with biting wind, can wreak havoc on your skin. Let this Healing Balm be the trick up your sleeve to nourish and moisturize your skin when you need it most. Use it to help soothe and protect chapped skin that’s been out in the cold too long, suffering from wind-burn, or just seems to shrivel up with so much indoor heating.

2. Get soft, kissable lips.

Flaky, chapped lips are a bummer. They hurt, they’re unattractive, and you can’t even fix them up with lipstick before that starts to dry and crumble up too. So what can you do? Reach for that Organic Healing Balm, of course! You can put it straight on your lips to help reduce the discomfort and provide the extreme moisture your lips are craving.

3. Soothe the sunburn.

When you first notice a sunburn, the best thing you can do is be proactive and start the healing process as soon as possible. Bring the Healing Balm with you to the pool, on a camping trip, during your afternoon hike—anywhere the sun is shining. Its nourishing properties help your skin recover faster so that you feel better. And don’t let this winter weather fool you; you can still get a painful sunburn so you might as well be prepared!

4. Use on your most sensitive areas.

Nursing can be a wonderful and intimate experience with your baby, but it can also lead to painfully swollen, chapped, or cracked nipples. Use the Original Organic Healing Balm after feeding (to allow for plenty of time for absorption) and help this sensitive area heal quicker to provide a more comfortable experience.

5. Perfect for babies, too!

Dealing with diaper rash is a unifying experience for parents and we want nothing more than to help our baby with the discomfort they must be feeling. The red, raw, and irritated skin from a diaper rash should not be ignored. Use our Original Organic Healing Balm on that sensitive area knowing with confidence that you are using a high-quality, natural product that is perfectly safe for your little one.

6. Use on cuts, bruises, and scrapes to help speed healing.

Dry skin, minor cuts, bruises, and scrapes can all benefit from The Original Organic Healing Balm. Simply apply to the cleaned area of concern and let the gentle, soothing qualities of the balm take over. But be careful—once you try it, you might get hooked!

And so much more!

  1. Can’t wait to try this out, I always get really dry elbows. But can you put it on tattoos to keep it moisturized?

  2. How did I miss using this for chapped lips?!? What an excellent idea. And I have just the perfect little container to transfer it to. Thanks!

  3. My daughter just got back grin the bac beach with a sunburn. I’m going to go whip up a batch and see if it helps. Thanks PT

  4. I bought the healing balm when I had severely chapped and sore lips. It cleared them up when no other product did. I melted some down and put it in lip balm tubes too so it’s easier to use (I think PT should sell it in lip balm tubes too! I will never buy any regular lip balms again. It’s that awesome!) Also use it on dry elbows, to soften my feet and on cuts! My favorite PT product, for sure!

  5. I usually make my own balms. Having been sick so much this winter I decided to give Balm Squad a try. I even order one for my son’s girlfriend. They have a very nice texture.

  6. I love the healing balm and cant wait to gift this to a family member expecting a little girl in August.

  7. After having my gallbladder removed my skin became constantly dry and I would get dry patches. I use the healing balm on the dry patches and it helps so much. My mom works with paper and gets dry hands really bad. This is excellent for her and since it has no fragrance, it is also safe for her.

  8. When I was pregnant I got PUPPS, which is a condition that causes severe itchy and irritation. After it went away, my legs were all torn up from all my itchy. The healing balm was a lifesaver in bringing my legs back to normal!

  9. I love the Healing Balm and can’t wait to try the new formulation! I love using the original balm on my dry skin and lips. I also put some sniffle stopper in the balm for a chest rub for my kiddos. Looking forward to trying the Balm Squad set as well!

  10. I ordered the healing balm when my husband’s thumb cracked open due to the dry winter air. ONE application and it healed his thumb. I’m a breastfeeding mom and this blog was super helpful to read. I’ll be using the Healing balm for irritation and discomfort after my son nurses. Along with chapped lips and flaky skin! Such a multi-purpose balm, and I’m so glad I have it on hand now!

  11. I love the original healing balm and I’m excited to try the balm squad! Healing balm works wonders on dry cracked hands and lips! I had not thought about using it as an after sun treatment, but what a great idea!

  12. I used to use an ointment from Meleuca but it’s not as effective as it used to be. I am looking forward to trying these balms especially the healing balm.

  13. I love the healing balm. I use it for alot of these things but some things I didnt think of using it for. Thanks for the informative post

  14. Need to get this! I adore the new packaging as well it’s beautiful. I was planning on trying to learn to make balms myself but I think I may need this for comparisons sake

  15. We love PT’s Healing Balm! A big jar now sits in our kitchen within easy reach of everyone. It healed up some stubborn pimples on my son’s forehead that he kept scratching and scabbing over. I don’t know why I didn’t think to use it sooner!

  16. I just love the healing balm and I can’t imagine how they could’ve made it better! My son has been using it on his eczema and it has really helped him. I can’t wait to try the new formula and also eventually the new balm squad!

  17. Just received the new formula yesterday. Can’t compare it to the old one, as I never tried it. This balm is amazing on my dry winter skin.

  18. I have used the healing balm successfully on chapped lips. I did try it on chapped cracked nuckles but it seemed to leave my hands very greasy. I plan on trying again… but maybe the new formula will be better.

  19. Healing Balm is the best product PT makes, and that is really saying something since I love so many things from them. It is so healing and beneficial to the skin. I have been using this winter on my wind blown cheeks, and dry hands and feet. While I loved the original formula, I am really excited to try this new formulation. It could be gritty, which never made it less effective, but it will be nice to have a smoother texture.

  20. This looks fantastic and I really want to use them. How can I safely reduce the dilution from 5% to something safe for my baby and toddler?

    1. Davina, first I’d like to link an article we have on using essential oils for babies and toddlers in case you would like to know our recommendations for how much to dilute per age: https://blog.planttherapy.com/blog/2018/11/02/infants-and-toddlers/. To reduce the dilution percentage in any product, you would need to increase the amount of carrier, which could be adding a carrier oil, lotion, or the Original Organic Healing Balm, which does not include any essential oil blends. For more specific information regarding your particular situation, feel free to reach out to our team at [email protected] and I’m sure they’ll be able to provide more help 🙂

  21. As a Momma with a little who takes after me and has sensitive skin, I can’t wait to try this! I love the new packaging, so pretty!

  22. I am super excited to try these balms. I am really excited for the sniffe stopper one. I love that synergy! It is amazing around my household and I can’t wait to use the balm if one of my littles get sick!!

  23. I haven’t tried this particular healing balm, but #1 is exactly how I use my DIY healing balm! I put it on before bed, sometimes wearing socks on my hands.

  24. I wanted to love the balm, I gave it a try for 3 days. But the more I used it, the more my hands were getting dry, flaky and super itchy. I m thinking that it might be because of the coconut oil in it. Super disappointed.

  25. It’s been in my cart for a while. It says it can be used on cuts, scrape, it should be cleaned first right then you can apply the balm on open wound?

    1. Pascale, large open wounds should receive medical care. Here, we are referring to minor cuts, like papercuts, small cuts that can arise from yard work, little kitten scratches, etc. If the wound is open and bleeding, this is not a good time to apply the Healing Balm. Clean it properly, allow the cut to clot, then apply the Healing Balm to help support the overall healing process 🙂

  26. I finally broke down and bought the healing balm for my husband for Christmas. He loves it! The smell is an acquired taste from the tamanu but it works wonderfully! Luckily, I haven’t experienced the graininess described by others. I’m especially excited to try the new scented healing balms!

    1. How often do you re-order? Haven’t gotten order some yet trying to find too many reasons why I should not get it!
      Thank you.

  27. I cant WAIT to try this. I have horrible skin in the winter and I’ve been told this is an amazing product. It’s in my cart for this months order

  28. I know I wanted healing balm but I’m breastfeeding I need it I cant wait to try this! I just emptied two glass lotions I’m going to clean them out and use it to mix healing balm with some oils. Definitely need to get better then kisses for that

  29. This works amazing! I mean, i have the original but i love it! I had no clue it was safe for babies and although i don’t have any now, this is good to know for the future. I also never thought to use it for sunburn which come this summer as always. Thanks for the great ideas! 🙂

  30. Swiss Army Knife is the perfect description for this balm. My husband broke open the skin on his thumb when he caught it with his drill while building. He used this daily and was mostly healed in about 3 days. I have eczema And it works wonderful. I was happy with the results from the original even with the grainy texture and looking forward to trying the improved balm.

  31. I recently bought the healing balm and absolutely love how it helps heal my severely dry skin. I have no issue with the texture but now I’m excited to try the updated version!

  32. I bought the healing balm a couple of months ago and it helps my dry hands so much. I would love to see Neem oil and Chamomile and Lavender essential oil added to it for extra healing benefits.

  33. So excited to try out the updated version!! I ordered the Balm Squad!! Can’t wait to receive it!! I loved the old formulation, but, since this IS Plant Therapy we are talking about, I have no doubt it is even better!!

  34. I’m so glad you all decided to revamp it, because otherwise I’m not sure I would have heard of it! It sounds amazing, especially with the new options.

  35. The healing balm is probably my favorite plant therapy products. I use it for so many things on a daily basis. Love it.

  36. Putting this on my wish list! Liked the original but definitely had issues with graininess which has led to me using it less. What is the shelf-life of the balm?

  37. I have only had this balm for a month or so and it does wonders for my daughters winter chapped cheeks and my cuticles love it too. I had not thought of putting it on my lips. Great idea!

  38. I am so excited to try the balms!!! I haven’t had too much luck making my own. And now you made a set of 4! So much easier, thanks PT.

  39. I love my healing balm, I never had any issue with the texture of it, but I’m excited to try this new and improved version. Also intrigued by the new blends….

  40. I love using this on my feet and hands before bed. I wake up with soft skin. It has also been great on my kids’ dry hands in the harsh winter we have been having. The backs of their hands are cracked and sometimes bleed. I started slathering this on their hands before bed and am noticing great improvement in their skin. Can’t wait to try the new formula if it’s even better than the first!

    1. The aroma of the healing balm is similar, as none of the ingredients have changed. However, you can always add essential oils into your healing balm to customize the scent or purpose 🙂 Feel free to reach out to our team of aromatherapists at [email protected] if you would like more information 🙂

  41. Thank you for the post. I’m looking forward to receiving the new Balm. I first tried Healing Balm this December and wish I had discovered it earlier. It’s amazing. I use it on my dry hands, feet and lips and also gave a bit to my daughter and son in law and they kept sending the container back for more!! (Yes, I bought them one too!!) It has cleared up my granddaughter’s eczema. I can’t say enough about it. I know I can trust the new formulation with the same confidence. Love the new look too!!

  42. I love the original formula but I am looking forward to trying the new version! My new grandson will be born in a few months, so this is going into the baby basket I’m making up for his mama.

  43. I finally ordered the original healing balm and we love it .. now with all these new options , I can not wait to try these all.

  44. I love my original healing balm, can’t wait to try the new version when I run out. It’s great for chapped skin, I must try it on lips too! I have been making my own versions with EOs added, and it’s a wonderful carrier base.

  45. Love the healing balm. It works great on my feet, but wished it wasn’t grainy. Definitely will be buying the new original healing balm. Of course, I want to try all of them.

  46. Perfect timing Plant Therapy. Everywhere I look I find someone new praising this healing balm and my dry West Virginia winter skin and lips are needing some major healing. This blog with all the suggested usages definitely helped me to take the plunge and place an order this morning.

  47. I love the new packaging. I am excited to try the new one and see how it is different from the old one. I just got the old one and we are already hooked. Softer and easier to apply will be perfect for my little who has to do everything by herself.

    1. I warmed it up and poured it into an empty twist tube, like used for solid deodorant ( you can get empty ones on Amazon, etc.). It’s easy to use and I can rub it in easier and less top surface is exposed every time you open it compared to the canister it comes in.

  48. I just bought the healing balm a few weeks ago and love it. It is a little difficult to use, but not so much that I wont use it!! But my tub is still nearly full so I’ll have to wait a while before trying the new version!

  49. The new packaging is horrid! Looks like something you would purchase at a dime store. Great product though! Reminds me of the chain jewelry stores at the mall that sell to teens and have body lotions. Please consider going back to a sophisticated package that does NOT look like a 10 yr old.

    1. Kisa, thank you so much for your input. We realize our design choices may not be loved by everyone and take all feedback very seriously. I’ll be sure to pass this onto the appropriate department 🙂

  50. I love the Healing Balm – but have experienced the graininess that led to the reformulation! I have a full 8oz tub – but just ordered another! Need to try the reformulated version!! Thanks PT!!

  51. I read about the healing balm some time ago, but was hesitant to try it because of the grainy texture some of the reviews described. I will be ordering the new and improved healing balm in a future order, Can’t wait to try it!!

  52. I just bought my first jar of healing balm a couple of weeks ago and I love it! I’m glad I’ll get the chance to see both formations, but I’m also a little apprehensive.

  53. I’m still new to EO’s and have not yet tried the healing balm, but would love to. Wondering if you can also add oils for a specific purpose such as pain relief to this balm. I would probably us a small portion of it for that if that is something you can do with this.

  54. Excited to try the healing balm and even more excited to get the “balm squad.” Love that you are so customer focused and are always listening and coming out with new products! I also love the educational element to your company. So glad I found plant therapy!!

  55. I can’t wait to get this. The things that were fixed was what I did not like in the old formula. I did not realize all the stuff you can use it for.

  56. The Organic Healing Balm is one of my favorites. A little goes a long way and it feeeeeels a-mazing! I can’t wait to try the new formula and the rest of the Balm Squad!

  57. This is great news. I love this product but my only complaint was that it was grainy. I’m just disappointed I won’t be able to try it for a while since I ordered a new one not to long ago.

  58. This sounds amazing! I’ve been looking for a gift for my best friend and I think this will be such a fun surprise! She’s beyond the baby stage, but she has active elementary boys.

  59. Already purchased the reformulated version. I love the old Healing Balm. Great for cracked dry feet. It was my first purchase from Plant Therapy.

  60. Just started using my recently ordered balm, so I’ll have to wait a while to try the reformulated version, but I’m excited for it!

  61. I’m so exciting about these and have placed them in my wishlist for when I make my next purchase! They sound soooo versatile and are perfect for everyday use with my family.

  62. Since finally trying the healing balm in December, and loving it, it is my new go to for baby shower gifts! So many uses and perfect for the new mom (and I seem to be finding myself among quite the baby boom!) I love the new packaging–even cuter for a shower gift!

  63. I love the old formulation of Healing Balm but am beyond excited to try the new one. I also love the packaging update. So cute.

Thanks for sharing some great tips on Usage. I hadn’t thought about a nipple balm but that is a great idea to keep in mind as I’m trying to become pregnant. I’m sure it will be great to help with belly itch as well!

  64. I have the healing balm and love love it. It has been especially great for my kids faces this winter. Although I have a near full container I really, really want the better than kisses and sniffle stopper balms as well. I may bite the bullet on the whole set.

  65. Great post. So informative. I’ve been meaning to try the healing balm for months now, but I keep finding other products that take precedence. I think this one has just climbed to the top of the priorities list 😉 thanks PT!

  66. Can’t wait to try this! I bet this will be great for my hands. Working in the medical field I am washing my hands constantly and it sure does put a lot of stress on my skin!

  67. I’ve had the healing balm on my wish list for a while so I was disappointed at first to hear it was reformulated. After reading this, I still think I want to try it!

    1. Tiffany, we know that some customers might be apprehensive about the change, but we promise the change is for the better! Just give it a try and we’re confident that you’re going to love the smoother, softer texture 🙂

  68. I am so excited to try this!!! I have failed several times at making my own. And now you made a set of 4! You guys rock!

  69. I’m excited that Silky Soft has been made into a balm! Better Than Kisses sounds great too. I wish these could be purchased individually.

    1. After using up or getting rid of my drug store lotions etc I am buying Plant Therapy lotions. I love the quality. I haven’t tried the healing balm yet, but I am looking forward to. It even looks good.
