It’s official, Marie Kondo is taking the world by storm. Maybe you first picked up her book a couple years ago and began the process of decluttering your life and finding joy in the items you own. Or maybe you binge-watched her new Netflix series and couldn’t wait to transform your own space. If you’re ready to get started on the Kon Mari method (or really any method for decluttering your home), essential oils are here to help. Check out these amazing ways that you can use EOs while you tidy up.

Get Motivated

This may be the hardest part of the whole process. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer enormity of sorting through everything you own and organizing it. Luckily there are several essential oils to help. Diffuse a few drops of the synergy blend Energy to help give you the boost of energy you need to get off the couch and get started tidying. May Chang is also an excellent uplifting oil to help boost your motivation. Or try the Get Moving Diffuser Blend, which can provide the boost of energy and mental clarity you need to get started.

Choosing What Sparks Joy

Part of tidying up is choosing what to keep, what to throw away, and what to donate. According to Marie Kondo, we should only keep those items that spark joy. Sounds easy, right? Well, not always. Parting with our stuff can often be the source of stress and confusion. Plant Therapy offers several synergy blends that can help give you the mental clarity you need to make these big decisions. Try diffusing a few drops of Brain Aid, Clarity, A+ Attention or Clear Intuition.

Organizing Your Oils

For any EO lover, it can be nearly impossible to part with any essential oil. After all, every oil sparks joy, right? We won’t be the one to argue with you on that point. However, it can be beneficial to take stock of your collection. Maybe you discover the odd empty bottle or a handful of duplicates or some oils that are past their prime. Not to mention, a beautifully organized collection can be both pleasing to the eye and make it easier for you to find your favorite oils (or try out something new).

Use Oils While You Clean

Once you’ve finished tidying your space, it’s time to clean. And it’s no secret that essential oils make excellent natural cleaners. By substituting EOs into your routine, you’ll not only save space by eliminating extra bottles of cleaners, but you’ll also get one step closer to having a natural household. Both Lemon and Tea Tree are great oils to start using as a cleanser. Or check out our Cleaning Set, complete with six essential oils to get you started.

Rest and Relax

And last but not least, it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy your newly clean, joyful space. After all your hard work, diffusing your favorite oils, or using one of our synergy blends, can be the perfect way to promote peace and relaxation in your home. Try a few drops of Tranquil, Relax, or Worry Free.

  1. My husband and I just started watching Marie Kondo’s show. I love the ideas you have for incorporating my PT EOs into the konmari method!

  2. Organizing essential oils? Have you looked in my essential oil collection? My oils could definitely use a little attention to organization after my last PT order. But yes, they all spark JOY. And I diffuse daily, so I use them up fast. I might need a few more essential oil carrying cases though.

  3. I love to have my diffuser running while o am cleaning – citrus oils are my favorite and keep me energized and smell fresh and clean to me.

  10. I have such a hard time letting go of things. I never thought to use my oils to help me declutter my house. When I’m cleaning I tend to get overwhelmed and discouraged so I am very excited to try diffusing a couple of these oils and find out which helps keep me motivated and ready to get rid of some things.

  11. I’ve definitely been going through my house and purging 10 years of “might need this”. Definitely have been using my eos to help keep my roll going!

  12. I feel like I could be a true pro at this tidying up and purging method if I didn’t have 4 kids (11,8,6,3) it seems far too difficult at this stage. Granted, I purge often with donations at least once a quarter. Great blog post PT!

  13. I love this. I’m reading Kon Mari now and can’t wait to get started. This blog really helped. Now I know exactly what I’m going to diffuse while cleaning.

  14. Thanks for all the great tips. I need all the help I can get to make me motivated to start my Spring Cleaning!

  15. Love this! My husband and I tend to hang on to everything ‘just in case’ or because it has ‘sentimental value’. But if we haven’t taken it out of the back closet in two years is it really that sentimental? The Marie Kondo method has helped eliminate the guilt of getting rid of things that serve no purpose in our home. I have also discovered that I accomplish so much more if I do 30 minute spree cleans, knocking out as much as I can in 30 minutes. This keeps cleaning from getting overwhelming and keeps me from getting distracted. Plus when you have to make a snap decision because you’re on a time crunch you’re less likely to keep those Captain D’s coupons that you’re never actually going to us. Set a timer, blast some music, do what you can and don’t worry about the rest.

  16. Its so nice to realize what oils to use to help clean your house and no harsh chemicals. Thanks for the awesome advice. πŸ™‚

  19. This is a good article, especially to include about relaxing at the end. Every few months we go through items in the house to purge. As a military family this helps a lot when it is time to move again. Once less thing on the moving checklist and keeps the new house from becoming cluttered. I think next time, which may be this coming weekend, I will try some A+ Attention to help. We have a big move coming after summer

  20. I really need to organize my oils! Also, they are great for diffusing while doing work around the house. Very motivating and uplifting!
