Let’s Talk About Florals

Summer seems like it’s full of citrus sometimes. It feels like all anyone can talk about is “orange this, lemon that, grapefruit everything” all season long.

But what if you’re more of a floral girl? What if you’re a little wild at heart, and you’d rather smell like a bouquet of roses than a slice of juicy fruit? We’ve got you covered! In honor of May Day, we’re talking everything floral today and checking out the floral section of the Plant Therapy Fragrance Wheel in a little more depth.

Fresh Florals

Fresh florals are exactly what you think when you think of floral scents: Full of rosy, soft notes that make you think of a field in bloom.

Clary Sage

Clary Sage is very earthy with hints that are fruity, floral, nutty, and herbaceous. Its soothing scent is the key that helps create a balancing feel that can help calm emotions and promote feeling chill after a long day.

Geranium Bourbon

Geranium Bourbon has a gorgeous softer, rose-floral smell with a herbaceous hint. This floral oil helps to balance your mind during times of stress or sadness. Plus, it’s great for your skin! Oh, and if you need yet another reason to snag some…it also helps promote menstrual health during bad PMS times.

Similar to Lavender, but different. Lavandin isn’t a “true” lavender, it’s a cross between Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) which grows at higher altitudes and Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia) which grows lower on the hillsides. It has a very sweet and floral scent that’s very similar to “true” Lavender.

Oh, Lavender. How do we love you? Let us count the ways…Lavender essential oil is world renowned for being one of the most versatile oils of all time, and for good reason!  It has an incredibly sweet, floral, herbal scent and also has tons of therapeutic properties. The smell of Lavender alone can help produce a calm, peaceful tranquil mood. Diffuse Lavender essential oil into the air before bedtime to promote peaceful sleep, or add Lavender to your favorite lotion or carrier oil to soothe the skin, and help unwind your senses.

There are so many things you can do with Lavender!

This vibrant floral essential oil comes from orange blossoms found in Egypt! It’s one of the most comforting and effective essential oils for helping deal with grief, nervous tension, or exhaustion. Neroli is also great for skin care. Adding Neroli to a lotion or carrier oil can help reduce the appearance of scarring, wrinkles, and blemishes, all while minimizing the look of pores and supporting new cell growth.

Palmarosa has a soft, sweet floral scent and is often diffused to freshen up and sanitize the air. It’s also considered an excellent skin-balancing oil for all skin types, kind of like Neroli. It’s also a great oil for supporting digestive health.

This gorgeous bloom is famous for its rich floral scent. Rose Absolute is also known for its calming properties, helping to soothe emotions and bring peace in the midst of fresh grief. It can promote relaxation before sleep when diffused or applied topically diluted in a carrier oil. Basically, if you love EO’s you need Rose in your collection.

Rose is also great in skin care oil, helping reduce the visible signs of aging, wrinkles and helping smooth skin.

Rose Otto

Rose Otto is an exquisite essential oil that has been prized for centuries. A little of this oil goes a long way, so just a tiny drop is needed to get all the benefits. This fragrant essential oil is known for its wonderful, floral scent that is comforting to the senses.

Sweet FloralsClear essential oil bottle next to a jasmine flower and candle

Sweet florals bridge the gap between florals and fruits; They have a floral scent with almost a sugar-dusted edge to them. This makes them perfect for everyone, even people who aren’t traditionally fans of florals!

Jasmine Absolute

Jasmine Absolute is known for its distinctive exotic floral scent that is commonly used in perfumes. Its intoxicating smell is supposed to be an aphrodisiac that increases feelings of love and romance. Plus, it’s uplifting and helps to create a positive atmosphere. Other popular uses include helping to rejuvenate and refresh the skin when added to skin care products.

Boronia Absolute

Boronia Absolute is a precious oil that comes from a rare shrub originating in Western Australia. During the late winter/early spring, flowering blossoms must be individually hand-combed from the shrubs because they’re so delicate. Boronia Absolute is an ultimate favorite in the perfume industry because of its incredible smell. This fantastic oil can be added to your favorite lotions, creams, or Plant Therapy carrier oils to create delicious-smelling treat!

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang is most commonly considered an aphrodisiac and loved by perfumers. With a refined, rounded floral scent, Ylang Ylang is great diffused or used in a perfume, and can also help reduce everyday worry and uplift your mood. Added to a carrier oil, it can also be used for a romantic massage!

  • Florals are my favorite! I have most of these in my collection now and I always turn to a floral when I need an extra boost in my mood. One day I hope to try boronia, it sounds lovely.

  • This is really helpful in distinguishing between the florals. It can be hard to imagine floral smells but the descriptions do a great job.

  • I love florals, got almost all of them except neroli, geranium and jasmine. Thosevare the next specially for my skin serum!

  • I love citrus, but I adore florals overall even more. I saved to get jasmine, and I wish I could just use it everyday, in every way. I love neroil as well. I use clary sage and geranium in almost every blend (because it helps balance female hormones), although, I don’t much love lavender. I use it because it does have a calming effect, but it isn’t my favorite scent. Diffused with clary and lemon I can almost like it!

So far my favorite blend is jasmine with a bit of bergamot and sandalwood mixed into it. I have read lime is good, but I am not a fan of the lime oil. Jasmine on its own is incredible, it just makes me happy.

  • I love the florals SOO MUCH!! Interestingly, when I started in oils, I would have said that I liked musky and less feminine scents far more, but the scent of essential oils are so much more pure and fresh than artificial fragrances that I have completely changed my opinion. Essential Oils for the WIN!!!

  • I haven’t gotten to try many of the florals, but I absolutely adore neroli. It is such a lovely, soothing scent. Lavender is wonderful, too! I hope to invest in jasmine and rose at some point.

  • Thank you for this summary, I find it very useful. I use florals a lot – in love with Ylang Ylang, Rose, Jasmine and Magnolia. After this article I need to try Geranium and Boronia. Thank you!

  • I love to use floral oils, of many different types. One thing I have learned about them is to make sure they are properly diluted. They are often very strong out of the bottle, but diluted they are wonderful.

  • I just got Geranium bourbon & am so excited to try it! I overdid it with geranium one time and can only use it in tiny amounts, but I was encouraged by the description of & comments about the geranium bourbon. Love how the rose scent balances the geranium. Am going to make a PMS blend with it.

  • Thank you! I’ve wondered about how the florals compared to each other so that I can have better luck with finding something new based on what I already know I like!

  • Great article! I love adding my florals to my moisturizers – aside from the health benefits, it just makes me feel fancy 🙂

  • The floral oils are my go-to’s for daily diffusion. Jasmine is next on my list to try! Can’t wait

  • It’s so nice to have all of the descriptions listed in one place. Makes it easier to decide which one to buy next. Thanks!

  • I’m usually not a big fan of floral scents, but rose is amazing! And I’ve been experimenting adding other florals to blends, and they’re really growing on me! Thank you PT!

  • Lavender is one of the most common, and also the most recognized floral fragrances around. You simply can’t go wrong with a Lavender!

  • You’ve made buying Rose possible, thank you! I was so excited and cautious when putting rose drops in my diffuser for the 1st time, it is perfect!

  • I ordered the Jasmine. I have ingredients to make soap, so now I just need to wait patiently for the oils to go with it. Thanks PT.

  • I’m glad you mentioned the sweet florals. I didn’t know there was a bridge to the gap and I’m not normally a floral fan. Will definitely try those first.

  • What a fun & informative post! I just ordered geranium bourbon & so looking forward to smelling & trying it.

  • What a wonderful and detailed post! Thank you! I’m sorry that I missed out on the discount because we were on the road (with my Lemon Squeezie) but this post is even more valuable than 15% off!! Thank you!

  • Thanks for this post, I know I need to start using the florals I have more and this was very helpful.

  • I never thought of florals being separated into fresh and sweet before!
I love most of these scents but jasmine is probably my favorite of these.
I wish there were essential oils/ essence oils for tulips or daffodils!

  • Thanks for the description of these oils!! I’ve never even heard of neroli or boronia so I have no clue what they would smell like, but after reading this, I really want to try boronia!!

  • I cannot wait to continue to add to my floral essential oils. I have Rose Absolute and I love it! Jasmine and Germanium are on list. I did not know about Boronia. As always, love reading and learning from Plant Therapy’s blog

  • Just order Ylang Ylang extra and organic Ylang Ylang complete with FLOWERS coupon. I have been looking at Ylang Ylang EO for a while and the event is just perfect timing. Cannot wait for the EO to come.

  • I love this! Florals are favorite oils to make things with. I will be giving some of these a try for Mother’s Day 🙂

  • Took advantage of this discount and ordered rose absolute and jasmine! Can’t wait to get them! As always thank you PT!

  • oh how I love florals – thanks for making them affordable! I think I’ll have to decide which one I want for mother’s day!

  • I think it’s an understatement to say that Clary Sage is “earthy” I sometimes use it in a roller bottle to help with menstrual cramping and I always smell like I am a dirty hippie when I use it! I added some Lavender to it and that definitely helps a little, but it’s still a very earthy smell!

I am eager to check out Rose and Jasmine too!

  • So excited about this, I’ve had a few florals on my wish list and was able to get them today with the coupon code!! While I do like citrus scents/oils, I love florals. I’ve always got fresh flowers in my house so I’m excited to be able to diffuse more floral scents and do some DIY body products!!

  • Just ordered geranium bourbon, and rose otto, they will make a great addition in my sugar scrubs, just in time for making some for Mother’s Day next week.

  • I’ve recently started adding eo to my skincare routine. Will have to add neroli and geranium bourbon to my list!!

  • I REALLY wish the FLOWERS coupon was for Thurday or Friday ( you know, pay days? lol) Is this only for today? Boo!

  • Great information on each of the florals all in one place. Thank you! I’ve been trying to expanded my essential oil fragrances from my regular love of citrus and firs to include more florals. Will, definitely be taking advantage of some of these.

  • I want to love Clary Sage, Geranium, and Ylang Ylang for the emotional benefits but they don’t agree with my nose. If I blend them with other oils, how small of an amount can I add of those florals to still get the emotional benefits?

  • Thank you for the code!! I was JUST shopping the floral department this morning, now I can check out and save some money!

  • Thank you for the explanation of each. I’m not really a floral oil kind of gal…but I think there’s a few that I might like. I’ve typically avoided rose and jasmine scents. But I’m open to others.

  • I never thought I was a big rose fan until I smelled rose absolute. It will now be a staple for me.

  • YESSS!! I’m a floral girl, all the way. <3 Thanks for the coupon code. Time to finally get the floral I've been saving for!!
