1. Gather All Your Supplies
All you need for this Mason Jar Lamp is a mason jar, citrus slices, vegetable oil, and some floating wicks (you can find them on Amazon). And you’re not limited to citrus slices! You can use flowers, petals, or any other decorative item you wish.
2. Add It All to Your Jar
Start by adding your citrus slices to the jar and then fill it up 3/4 of the way with water. Combine your essential oils with the vegetable oil and add it to the jar. Once all the oil has risen to the top, you can add the floating wick.
3. Light Your Lamp
All that’s left is to light your Mason Jar Lamp! The vegetable oil provides several hours of burning power to your candle. It’ll make the perfect addition to your porch, patio, or backyard BBQ.

this sounds like a fun idea, I can not wait to do it this fall
Is it safe to use these indoors as well?
Absolutely! You’ll want to be careful with it like you would any candle.
I am looking forward to receive these oils. I use my lavender oil in PM for sleep.
Looks like a fun project that will smell amazing!
That looks really fun! I need to find floating wick Asap! To give this a try!
I think I’ll try this with Shield Me for our next outdoor movie night! Thanks!
I love this idea! I may use this idea for my daughters quinceanera! Thank you Plant Therapy!
Can you use olive oil or sunflower oil instead of the vegetable oil? I don’t typically have vegetable oil in the house. Thank you.
Absolutely! We chose vegetable oil because it’s light and has very little to no smell. Olive oil will also work, it’ll just have a slight olive oil scent to it.
Love this idea! Does it actually give off the smell of the oils? Like if I did this with the hug blend to repeal mosquitos etc?
Yes, you can smell the oils! We didn’t test it with our Nature Shield blend, but it should work to help repel bugs. If you try it, let us know how it goes!
Super cool. I wish I had known about the floating wicks for my wedding a year ago. I made something similar to this but with tiny candles, fruit slices and rosemary stems. Plus citronella and rosemary essential oils.
Just received my floating wicks today and had to try it out. It works! Thank you Plant Therapy for this great DIY idea.
That looks fun to try!
So cool!! I wonder if this would work with shield me to keep bugs away?
We tested it with one of the summer blends, so we can’t say for sure. But there’s no reason why it shouldn’t work for that!
How long does it last? Recommendations on floating wicks?
I got several hours out the candle and you can easily add more oil to extend the burn time. Also, you can find floating wicks on Amazon!
Wow, I will have to try this!
This is a great idea. I love Mason jars!! Thank you.
This looks like a really fun thing to do. I can mix and match oils in the jars to my heart’s delight. Some with citronella, some with one of the Summer blends or even a single oil that I enjoy.
Such a neat idea and easy to make! I’m looking forward to trying it.
I love this idea, so easy and fun and beautiful on the patio. Thanks for the ideas you continue to come up with!
So cool..i love it!
